On 1 February 2010, at the area beside Kromaluang Chumpon Khet Udomsak Shrine, Don Hoi Lot, Bang Chakreng Tambol, Muang District, Samutsongkhram Province, Mr. Suwit Khunkitti, minister of Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE), opened the event entitled “Global warming can be relieved if wetlands are cared”, as to mark the annual World Wetlands Day. The event aimed to stimulate local people to cooperate in conserving and rehabilitating Don Hoi Lot area to recover to its healthy condition within one or two years. Activities in this event included releasing fish to recover fish fertility in the area, marching together to promote wetland conservation (joined by the Wetland Conservation Network, the Environment Boyscouts, governmental officers and volunteers from MNRE, as well as making a vow to cooperate in conserving wetlands. The flag to conserve this wetland was also given. There was also a seminar on “The Future of Don Hoi Lot” as to mark the 10th anniversary of the Don Hoi Lot Wetland being registered as a Ramsar site (a Wetland of the World) as well.

Don Hoi Lot was recorded in the list of wetlands that are important internationally or Ramsar sites under the Convention on Wetlands on 5 July 2001. It is the No. 1099 of Ramsar sites. The wetland covers land and sea areas of Bang Kaew Tambol, Bang Chakreng Tambol, Laem Yai Tambol, and Klong Kone Tambol, Muang District, Samutsongkhram Province. Don Hoi Lot is characterized by muddy beach being lush with various economically valuable shellfish, especially razor clams (Hoi Lot), which is unique in this region. Moreover, the wetland is also a habitat of many migrating birds, such as egretta garzetta (Nog Yang Pia), grey herons (Nog Kra Sa Nual), red hawks (Yiew Daeng), and sterna albifrons (Nog Nang Nual Klaeb Lek), etc. It is therefore very important to stimulate people in the area and neighboring provinces to recognize value and importance of Don Hoi Lot so that they participate in conserving and rehabilitating Don Hoi Lot Wetland. Improving Don Hoi Lot to recover its previous healthy condition will be in compliance with the “One Province One Ramsar Site” Policy that the ministry of MNRE (Mr. Suwit Khunkitti) gave to participants in the event of World Wetlands Day on 2 February 2009, as to stimulate all provinces to take a good care of wetlands in their provinces to improve their conditions by one or two years.
